Morton’s Neuroma:
Who is Affected?
Common conditions affecting up to 1 in 3 people in their lifetime. It typically impacts the nerves between the 3rd and 4th toes.
Symptoms
- Sharp, burning pain between toes. 
- Sensation of a pebble or lump in the shoe. 
- Tingling or numbness in the foot. 
- Pain worsens with high heels or tight shoes. 
The Causes
- Irritation or damage to nerves between toe bones. 
- Often due to: 
- Tight or high-heeled shoes. 
- Activities putting pressure on feet (e.g., running). 
- Foot problems like flat feet, high arches, bunions, or hammertoes. 
The Diagnosis
- Physical examination by a healthcare provider 
- Ultrasound may be used to visualise nerve and surrounding tissues. 
- Electromyography may be used to rule out other conditions. 
The Treatment
Self-Care
- Rest and elevate the foot. 
- Apply ice for pain relief. 
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen). 
- Wear wide, comfortable shoes with soft soles. 
- Use metatarsal pads or insoles. 
Medical Treatments
- Orthotic devices or custom insoles. 
- Corticosteroid injections. 
- Non-surgical options like radiofrequency ablation. 
- Surgery (e.g., neurectomy) for severe cases.
